IntechOpen Marked 7,500th OA Book Release with 'Climate Policies,' Co-edited by Members of Nobel Peace Prize-Winning IPCC Team

23 April 2025

IntechOpen marked its 7,500th OA Book Release with the publication of "Climate Policies: Modern Risk-based Assessment of Investments in Mitigation, Adaptation, and Recovery from Residual Harm," part of the KU Select 2025 program.

Co-edited by Gary Yohe and Joel Smith, senior members of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), this timely volume offers a comprehensive evaluation of contemporary climate policy strategies.

The book is framed around three key policy responses, as highlighted by former Presidential Science Advisor John Holdren:

  • Mitigation: Reducing the probability of harmful climate impacts
  • Adaptation: Managing the consequences of those impacts
  • Suffering: Enduring the unavoidable residual effects

In the preface, Yohe states:

"When it comes to responding to climate policies, we have three choices – abate, adapt, or suffer."

Applying a risk-based approach to the assessment of climate policies, this book evaluates their effectiveness using IPCC evaluation criteria: climate change damages, co-benefits, sustainability, equity, and institutional resilience. It identifies gaps in our current understanding of the risks and uncertainties surrounding climate impacts and explores opportunities to manage them.

Published as part of IntechOpen’s Sustainable Development book series, the book supports SDG 13: Climate Action, offering policymakers, researchers, and organisations actionable insights for navigating the ongoing climate crisis.

As we publish Climate Policies, IntechOpen’s 7,500th open access book, we are approaching the 20th anniversary of our first open access book, back in July 2005. This milestone reflects our long-term commitment to open access publishing and the dissemination of knowledge on globally relevant topics.
